‘Wizard of Oz’ to be honored at Oscars

In celebration of its 75th anniversary, “The Wizard of Oz” will be honored as part of the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 2. The Academy announced this news today in an extremely vague press release which said nothing whatsoever about how said honor would play out; perhaps they’re busy lining up Miley Cyrus or somebody to sing “Over the Rainbow.” (Anne Hathaway? Madonna? Beyonce?) They probably won’t be making much of the fact that “The Wizard of Oz,” though nominated, did not win Best Picture in 1939 (an award then called Outstanding Production); “Gone with the Wind” took that honor. “Oz” won only for original score and best song, the definitive performance of which will always and forever be this one:
