Should anyone be looking for a really good romantic movie for Friday night — well, I aim to please here at P&P. It strikes me that romantic movies fall into several general categories; here are a handful of recommendations for each, in no particular order. Though I truly love every one of these movies named, I’m sure I’m leaving out some of your favorites (and probably some of mine, too; it’s early); chime in the comments with your picks.

Romantic Comedies

Oh, so many. Tried and true: “Clueless,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Moonstruck,” “Roxanne,” “Groundhog Day,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “Amelie.”  Classics: “Roman Holiday,” “The Lady Eve,” “Bringing Up Baby,” “Bachelor Mother” (this one, starring Ginger Rogers, is a rarity; it’s adorable), “My Man Godfrey.” Recent charmers: “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Ruby Sparks,” “Enough Said,” “Liberal Arts,” “Crazy Stupid Love.”

Romantic Dramas

“The Deep Blue Sea,” “Rebecca,” “Before Sunrise,” “Bright Star,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Jane Eyre,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Vertigo,” “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “In the Mood for Love.”

Romantic Musicals

“Swing Time” (really, any Astaire/Rogers film), “Once,” “Moulin Rouge,” “Romance & Cigarettes” (bonus: James Gandolfini!), “Singin’ in the Rain.”
