Should be some guys lining up outside Cinerama any day now, no? This morning, starwars.com announced the cast for the next and long-awaited installment, which has a release date of December 18, 2015. Along with the returning “Star Wars” veterans Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker, the cast will include newcomers Oscar Isaac (recently seen wrangling a cat in “Inside Llewyn Davis”), Adam Driver (Hannah’s oddball boyfriend in “Girls”), John Boyega (“Attack the Block,” TV’s “24: Live Another Day”), Andy Serkis (a.k.a. Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” series), Domhnall Gleeson (“About Time,” Bill Weasley in the “Harry Potter” movies), Max von Sydow (veteran actor and two-time Oscar nominee, recently seen in “Shutter Island” and “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”) and Daisy Ridley (who’s worked mostly in British television, including “Mr. Selfridge.”). It was not announced who would play which role, though Driver is widely believed to be playing a villain.
All of this puts an end to a wildly active rumor mill, recently speculating that, among others, Benedict Cumberbach, Lupita Nyong’o, Gary Oldman, Michael Fassbender, Hugo Weaving, Saoirse Ronan and Chiwetel Ejiofor were being considered. Maybe so, but the names announced today are the final cast. Director J. J. Abrams, who wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Kasdan, begins shooting next month.
