Christopher Walken to tap-dance as Captain Hook

Well, this is jolly news for a Monday morning. Remember “The Sound of Music Live!,” last December, which was mercilessly hyped (and, for the record, not live if you were on our coast) and fairly underwhelming? Well, NBC’s still firmly on the live-musical-for-the-holiday season train, with “Peter Pan” on tap for early December. The announcement’s an indication that this might be a lot more fun than watching Carrie Underwood gazing worshipfully at Audra McDonald (though you can’t blame her for that): Christopher Walken has been cast as Captain Hook. And he’ll be tap-dancing.  I’m in. (No word yet who will play Peter; other than NBC confirming that they approached Kristen Bell and that she wasn’t available. As is traditional in musical theater, Peter will be played by a woman. Mary Martin played the title role in a live NBC production of the musical, nearly 60 years ago.)

And oh yes, Walken can dance. This Fatboy Slim video, from 2001, was directed by Spike Jonze.
