Scary Movie Week: ‘The Conjuring’

So last night I asked the nice concessions-counter worker at Pacific Place what her favorite scary movie was, and she pondered it while scooping my popcorn but fairly quickly came up with “The Conjuring.” Good choice; it’s certainly the scariest movie I can think of from the past few years, and a real showcase for the classic arts of Unexpected Noises in a Creaky Old House, Sudden and Fleeting Appearances of Ghostlike Creatures With Bad Teeth, and Random Descents into Basements Despite All Indications That This Would Be A Terrible Mistake. I have not been able to bring myself to watch “Annabelle,” the sequel (rumor has it that it’s not as effective) but never mind; just thinking of “The Conjuring” is enough to get me wondering if my house has enough lamps in it, and vowing to postpone that trip down to the basement until daylight.
