Varsity Theatre reopens Friday, Feb. 13

It won’t be an unlucky Friday the 13th for moviegoers in the University District: The historic Varsity Theatre, closed since New Year’s after a change in operations (formerly run by Landmark, it’s now under Far Away Entertainment), reopens this week. Its initial programming will be three of this year’s nominees for the Academy Award for best picture: “Foxcatcher,” “The Theory of Everything,” and “Whiplash.” During the closure, the theater underwent a conversion to all-digital projection and sound; other updates include a new concessions area and some general sprucing-up. More updates remain to be done, and a grand re-opening will soon be announced for March — but in the meantime, three more screens are back in business in the University District, and that’s good news.
