New York Times Editorial Board advocates repealing pot prohibition

Marijuana legalization advocates picked up a big endorsement this weekend as the New York Times

The New York Times endorses pot legalization.

The New York Times endorses pot legalization.

Editorial Board endorsed repealing pot prohibition. The paper becomes the largest in the country to advocate for legalization.

“It has been more than 40 years since Congress passed the current ban on marijuana, inflicting great harm on society just to prohibit a substance far less dangerous than alcohol,” wrote the Editorial Board.

“The federal government should repeal the ban on marijuana.”

The Editorial Board is scheduled to publish six more editorials in their “High Times” series on pot throughout the week.

The Seattle Times endorsed legalization in February 2011 and lent its support for Initiative 502, which voters later approved to legalize pot.

Public support for legalizing marijuana continues to rise. Fifty-eight percent of those polled in a 2013 Gallup poll said they favor legalization.
