King salmon fishing mania hits inner-Elliott Bay

We all like big pigs, and these aren’t the kind wallowing in the mud, but are the types swimming around in inner-Elliott Bay.

Sport anglers call them kings or chinook, and so far this summer the bay has been the crowning producer of fish and boy are these some big fish too.

OClaire J. Enstad of Edmonds was one of the lucky anglers who recently caught a 39 pound king on July 31 during the evening bite in Elliott Bay.

Read more about Enstad’s catch and check out his big pig picture in my Outdoor Notebook in the sports section of The Seattle Times this Sunday.

State Fish and Wildlife checker Pete Sergeef at the West Seattle boat ramp has seen plenty of kings up to 30 pounds this summer.

To top it off the inner-bay, which is open Fridays to Mondays only, has produced some of the best catches in Puget Sound, and today [Aug. 7] Sergeef checked 50 chinook landed for 100 boats by 2 p.m.

There was also a rumor of a 44 pounder taken last week.

According to state Fish and Wildlife personnel the tribal gill-net fishery in the bay this past Wednesday was stellar too.

The tribes caught 350 kings in the bay, and 3,800 more kings in the Lower Duwamish River. About 10 percent of the fish caught had coded wire tags.

As word of this gets out don’t expect it to be a peaceful fishery this weekend.
