Steelhead single day count at Bonneville Dam broken multiple times this past week

I just got back from two days in Vancouver, B.C. on a short, but sweet family vacation getaway, and in that short time more news comes out of the Big C.

Records are being broken left and right in the Lower Columbia River this past week, and now a possible sport record catch of summer steelhead has occurred.

According to Joe Hymer, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist, just over 8,300 steelhead were estimated kept from the sport fishery below Bonneville Dam during July 2009. It’s the largest one-month total since at least 1975.

With that said it looks like for the third time in a matter of a few days, the new single-day steelhead count at Bonneville Dam was set on Thursday, Aug. 13 with 34,053 steelhead.

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, 18,671 steelhead were tallied, and on Wednesday, Aug 12, the count was 28,314.

The previous record since counts began in 1938 was 14,432 fish on Aug. 3, 2001. So far this summer, 258,087 steelhead have been counted at Bonneville.
