Everett Coho Derby a great sucess over the weekend

The Everett Coho Derby was held this past weekend, and there was plenty to hoot and holler about as anglers checked in plenty of fish.

Right around 2,200 anglers weighed in 521 coho on Saturday, and then brought in 580 more to the derby weigh station on Sunday.

“The fishing was great and not everyone caught their limit, but almost all had a fish or two,” said Mark Spada, coordinator of the largest salmon derby on the West Coast. “We’ve had a little bit more fish weighed in like in 2007 (1,166 coho) and 2009, but what we saw this past weekend was still a lot of fish.”

The majority of coho checked in for the derby came from the saltwater areas compared to rivers like the Snohomish system.

“There wasn’t a lot of fish caught in the river this time around,” Spada said. “In the Top 50 there was only six fish caught in the river. We’ve had such a weird year for weather that it seemed like not too many fish were heading upriver, although yesterday [Sunday] afternoon the Lower Snohomish picked up pretty good too.”

Results: 1, Jay Kemp, 16.72 pounds caught in Marine Area 8-2, $3,000; 2, Pat Flynn, 16.52 caught in Marine Area 9, $2,000; 3, John Stone, 15.74 caught in Snohomish River, $1,000; 4, Gerald Johnson, 15.62 caught in Marine Area 8-2, $750; 5, Kyle Willis, 15.48 caught in Area 8-2, $500.

Spada says their news release will come out later this afternoon, and I will post it once they have it ready.
