Low wild steelhead returns prompt closure soon of the Lower Green River

The Lower Green (Duwamish) River in King County will close to all fishing starting Jan. 16 until June 4 to reduce the wild steelhead mortality, and the upper portion of the river will close beginning Feb. 1-June 4.

The Lower Green River closure is from the 1st Ave. South Bridge in Seattle up to the South 277th Bridge in Auburn. The Upper Green River closure is from the 277th Bridge in Auburn up to the Tacoma Headworks Dam.

The 2009-2010 forecast of wild steelhead returning to the Green River is only 458 fish, well below the spawning goal of 2,000 steelhead. This action will reduce the incidental hooking mortalities of wild steelhead.
