While the number of smelt have decreased dramatically in northern Puget Sound, the La Conner Rotary Smelt Derby is alive and well, and will be hosting its 45th annual contest on Feb. 27.
The derby is open for all ages and will be held on the public docks at 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost is $2.
Other activities include a Pancake Breakfast at 8 a.m. ($5) that benefits the La Conner High School senior class; and a 5K-10K Smelt Run/Walk sponsored by the Skagit Symphony that begins at La Conner Middle School. Register at 8 a.m., and the race begins at 10 a.m.
There will also be a raffle, kids activities like fish printing at Maple Hall, tours of the Sea Scout boat and a hot dog lunch at the Bank of America parking lot.
