San Juan Islands spring salmon fishery blooming

Just got an e-mail from Sharon beach at King’s Marine Center in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and she reports that the salmon fishing is “heating up.”

They host a local derby called the Sixth Annual Frank Wilson Memorial Derby that runs from Feb 1-April 15 each year.

This past week has been very productive, Beach said.

The current leader of the derby is Pete Nelson of Shaw Island with a 20.95 pound chinook.

Nelson caught the big blackmouth using a herring, but Beach says a lot of the anglers also got into some nice 14-plus pound fish with Silver Horde Coho Killers in Double Glow Watermelon.

The derby also has weekly winners for the largest fish of the week, and then they’ll announce the final top three of the season on April 15 with a mystery weight fish thrown in.

All proceeds for the derby go to our local EMS in the San Juan Islands. Details: 360-378-4593 or e-mail at kingsmarine@rockisland.com.
