Lower Columbia River estuary sturgeon fishery extended

A shortfall in the sturgeon catch in the Lower Columbia River estuary has allowed state Fish and Wildlife to extend the fishing season through July 11.

“We’ve seen a lower than expected catch of sturgeon and effort is also down,” said Joe Hymer, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist.

The sturgeon catch and keep fishery below the Wauna power lines near Cathlamet was supposed to close after Saturday (June 26) when the 9,600 sturgeon catch guideline was achieved.

But, the actual and projected kept catch for the current season (Jan. 1-June 26) totals 2,950 white sturgeon. Based on the catch guideline, an additional 6,650 fish remain available for harvest.

Sturgeon fishing will remain open daily in this area through July 11, and then on July 13 state Fish and Wildlife will reevaluate the season to see if more fishing is possible after that.

The Columbia from Wauna to the east end of Skamania Island will close for sturgeon catch and keep after July 31 as planned, and is open for fishing Thursdays to Saturdays only.
