Most parts of Puget Sound close for crabbing after Labor Day weekend

The summer Dungeness crab fishery is winding down in what has been a fairly decent summer.

After sunset on Sept. 6, crabbing will close in the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca (Marine Catch Area 6); Deception Pass to East Point (8-1); East Point to Possession Point (8-2); northern Puget Sound-Admiralty Inlet (9); central Puget Sound (10); south central Puget Sound (11); and Hood Canal (12).

Crabbing will remain open the entire Labor Day weekend in all the above areas.

Crab anglers are reminded that they are now required to submit catch record cards whether or not they caught crab during the season by Oct. 10. Those who fail to submit their catch cards will face a $10 fine when they purchase a 2011 Puget Sound crab endorsement.

Some areas will remain open for crabbing after Sept. 6. They are:

Western Strait of Juan de Fuca (4 and 5) and southern Puget Sound (13), which are open daily through Jan. 2, 2011.

The Bellingham-San Juan Islands (7 South, 7 East and 7 North) are open Wednesdays to Saturdays only, plus the entire Labor Day weekend through Sept. 30.
