Ocean salmon fisheries remain good for a mix of coho and kings

The ocean salmon fisheries are productive for a mix of chinook and hatchery coho, and all ports appear in no danger of getting shutdown early.

Ilwaco will remain open daily through Sept. 30, Westport is open daily through Sept. 19, and La Push and Neah Bay are open daily through Sept. 18. Daily limit is two salmon; release wild coho.

“Westport had a 1 1/2 fish per person average, and they had a couple of days last week that they did great on coho and it is the first time this season when they had more coho than chinook in the catch,” said Wendy Beeghly, a state Fish and Wildlife coastal salmon biologist. “They (the charter boats) are going out quite a ways from 200 to 240 foot line.”

To the north at Neah Bay it was typically a slow week with a 0.4 fish per person average. The catch was almost 50-50 chinook to coho, and most were going way out to places like Swiftsure Bank to catch them.

At La Push it was a 0.8 fish per person average, and about 50-50 chinook to coho.

Down south, Ilwaco had a 0.84 fish per rod average, and “it was kind of tough fishing down there this week,” Beeghly said. “They had a 5-to-1 coho to chinook ratio, but still a lot of chinook down there. They’re going out to 300 foot sometimes, which is odd for this time of the year.”

Here are the coastal port catches by the numbers:

Ilwaco: 5,819 anglers Aug. 23-29 caught 709 chinook (63.6 percent of the catch quota of 10,600) and 3,693 hatchery coho (58.9 of 37,100). Westport: 2,102 anglers Aug. 23-29 caught 666 chinook (74.2 of 28,000) and 1,557 hatchery coho (31.2 of 27,450).

La Push: 358 anglers Aug. 23-29 caught 113 chinook (41.4 of 2,450) and 157 hatchery coho (55.7 of 1,880). Neah Bay: 590 anglers Aug. 23-29 caught 96 chinook (55.9 of 5,400) and 134 hatchery coho (50.8 of 7,720).

Coastwide: 8,868 anglers Aug. 23-29 caught 1,584 chinook (67.8 of 46,500) and 5,541 hatchery coho (48.7 of 74,200).
