Celebrate the New Years with a bucket of razor clams

Coastal razor clam lovers can ring in the New Year with a three-day dig that is expected to draw huge crowds on all open beaches.

Digging will be open Dec. 31-Jan. 1 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Copalis, Mocrocks and Kalaloch; and Jan. 2 at Twin Harbors. Digging is allowed from noon to midnight each day.

More than 22,000 razor clam diggers have turned out during previous New Year’s Eve openers.

Diggers will be able to take advantage of this winter’s first daylight dig Dec. 31 when low tide occurs at 3:40 p.m. Low tide Jan. 1 is minus-0.4 feet at 4:31 p.m.; and Jan. 2 is -0.7 at 5:18 p.m.

The daily limit is the first 15 clams dug regardless of size or condition. Each digger’s limit must be kept in a separate container.

Early next month, state Fish and Wildlife also plans to announce more digging dates for 2011. Approval of those dates will depend on the results of future marine toxin tests.
