Sekiu producing winter chinook, but angler effort is light

I got in touch with Arlen Olson, longtime owner of Olson’s Resort at Sekiu, and he gave me the lowdown on the winter chinook fishery happening in the western Strait of Juan de Fuca.

“There are a few locals going out, but with the economy being so bad it is hard to get people from afar to come,” Olson said. “We’ve had clear weather with a little north wind which makes it not too pleasant at times.”

Olson says most anglers were fishing right in front of the Caves to the Hoko River mouth trolling flashers and hootchies, Coyote spoons or a cut-plug herring.

“The few boats getting out have been doing well and it doesn’t take very much to catch a one-fish daily limit,” Olson said.
