Lingcod fishing still going strong in Puget Sound, and halibut action is fairly good around Port Angeles

Those looking for some saltwater fishing action need to look no further than the Whidbey Island area for lingcod, and the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca for halibut in the coming days.

“I’ve been doing phenomenally good on the lings, and Sunday we caught seven fish in an hour and a half, and then six more (Tuesday) in the same amount of time,” said Gary Krein, owner of All-Star Charters in Everett who has been fishing in the Possession Bar area.

“All you need to do is find the holes and cracks around rock piles using live flounder or a white Point Wilson Dart type jigs,” Krein said.

Nick Kester, Krein’s fishing guide partner has been running to Dungeness Spit to get in on the halibut fishing and over the course of three days last week he managed to land five halibut for his customers with fish in the 20 pound range and the largest being 60 pounds.

Halibut fishing is open in the eastern Strait (Marine Catch Area 6) Thursdays to Saturdays only, and open Thursday to Sunday May 26 to May 29.

Halibut fishing in the western Strait of Juan de Fuca off Sekiu (Area 5) opens May 26-29, and then goes to a Thursday to Saturday only fishery until June 18.
