“Wear It Washington” campaign to boost life jacket awareness begins this week

As the long Memorial Day weekend rolls up on us, it is time for those heading out on boats now and throughout the summer to start thinking about begin safe on the water.

With that in mind this coming week (May 21-27) has been declared Safe Boating Week in Washington; and the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission reminds all water sport enthusiasts of the importance of safe boating and officially launches the “Wear It Washington!” campaign.

The Safe Boating Week runs in conjunction witth National Safe Boating Week, coordinated by the National Safe Boating Council and its boating safety partners across the U.S. and Canada to promote the importance of recreation boaters to wear life jacket.

The most recent statistics released by the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that 84 percent of boaters who drowned in 2009 weren’t wearing life jackets.

“Wear It Washington!” events will be held throughout the summer. Schedules of events can be found at the Wear It Washington website.
