King opener starts off mainly on the slow side on the Skagit and Cascade rivers

It was a humble beginning to the king fishery on sections of the Cascade and Skagit rivers that opened this past Wednesday, June 1.

“It was kind of a slow opener on the Cascade River,” said Brett Barkdull, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist. “Not very many fishermen showed up. I don’t know why, but it may be based on last year’s results, higher gas prices and the weather was pretty crummy.”

Barkdull said they recorded only eight fish on the June 1 opener.

“Actually a couple of boats did good and caught limits, but it was a fish here and there,” Barkdull said. “The bank fishermen didn’t do well on the Cascade, which was really clear, but not super low from what everybody told me.”
