Shad catches in Lower Columbia River on the rise

Shad fishing in the Lower Columbia has picked up as fish counts at Bonneville Dam have ramped up to more than 20,000 daily.

According to state Fish and Wildlife office in Vancouver, angler effort and catches were increasing.

Based on mainly incomplete trips, bank anglers just below Bonneville Dam averaged nearly three shad per rod when including the few fish released. Some shad were caught by boat anglers in the gorge and at Woodland.

Bank angling effort for shad is increasing with over 350 anglers tallied; however, there were still few boats fishing for shad.

Daily counts at Bonneville Dam on June 10 climbed to 27,691; on June 11 it went down to 16,609; and on June 12 it jumped back up to 29,532. The season total so far is 102,945.
