More spot shrimp fishing to happen in southern section of San Juan Islands

State Fish and Wildlife plans to announce more spot shrimp fishing time in the southern portion of the San Juan Islands.

“We are getting a few more spot shrimp fishing days in south Marine Area 7 (San Juan Island southern portion) only, next Wednesday (through) Saturday (July 6-9) as we still have some quota remaining there,” said Mark O’Toole, a state Fish and Wildlife shrimp biologist.

“This area has been pretty much hammered by the wind every day it has been open this season,” O’Toole said. “I haven’t seen anything quite like it since I have been working in shrimp management (which has been a while).

In north/central Marine Area 7 the catch quota has been reached when it opened for spot shrimp last Wednesday (June 22), so it will not reopen. Hood Canal is also done for the season as well.
