More spot shrimp fishing in southern San Juan Islands coming up this week

Just a reminder that anglers will be able to go for spot shrimp in the southern portion of the San Juan Islands Wednesday to Saturday (July 6-9).

“This area has been pretty much hammered by the wind every day it has been open this season,” Mark O’Toole, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist said late last week. “I haven’t seen anything quite like it since I have been working in shrimp management (which has been a while).”

In north/central Marine Area 7 the catch quota has been reached when it opened for spot shrimp last Wednesday (June 22), so it will not reopen. Hood Canal is also done for the season.

A reminder those who fish on July 7-9 can go for the “trifecta” on the water as both shrimping, crabbing and salmon fishing will be fair game.
