Reel time trivia winner a Washington native

Congratulations to our Reel Time Pacific Northwest fishing and outdoor trivia contest winner Matt Ashbach of Seattle who said the answer was “American Lake.”

Ashbach is a Washington native who grew up on Guemes Island in the San Juan Islands, and graduated from the University of Washington. You can also call him Dr. Ashbach as he is an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor in Everett.

He’s an avid salmon and halibut fisherman, but now as a new father of a nine-month-old baby girl his fishing time has been put on temporary hold.

“As such, I spent this past weekend reading about other people’s fishing adventures during her naptime instead of heading out for the Area 7 opener,” Ashbach said.

My dad taught me how to fish off Cypress Island in the summers and off Vendovi in the winters. We’d also hike to various lakes in the San Juans for trout fishing, Ashbach said.

“We still get out several times per summer, but between work and family not nearly enough,” Ashbach said. “Probably the highlight of the year is our annual pilgrammage to Ucluelet in late July or early August to load up the freezer on kings and halibut.”

I’m certain his fishing time won’t go to the wayside for very long as his wife’s family are great friends with director of fishing affairs for the Northwest Marine Trade Association Tony “The Truth” Floor.

About 65 percent of our readers got the right answer. Look out for the next trivia question when I post it on Monday morning.

Ashbach wins some Berkley Power Bait Products and spool of Berkley fishing line. I’m also going to throw in a nice fishing book so Ashbach can do some reading while his daughter naps.

This will be an ongoing weekly trivia contest through the summer where the winner who answers the question first will receive an outdoor prize that will range from books, Berkley bait, lures and other nifty items from the outdoors gunnysack.

The next trivia question will be posted on Monday, July 11.

Here are our rules for The Seattle Times contest.
