Pinks finally arrive in big numbers throughout Puget Sound

The pinks have arrived in Puget Sound, and fishing this weekend has been anywhere from good to excellent at times.

“Fishing is pretty good and there are quite a few humpies (males are known to grow a distinct hump on their back near spawning time) showing up, and I would say it will be slam dunk as we head into this week,” said Gary Krein, owner of All-Star Charters in Everett. “It has gotten better this afternoon (Sunday, Aug. 7), and we’ve see them jumping and rolling everywhere.”

Krein says there are still a bunch of silvers (coho salmon) around too, and he’s been getting both species the last four days off Jefferson Head. Most of the coho are 3 to 5 pounds, and the humpies are a little bigger.

Pete Sergeef, the state Fish and Wildlife checker at the Don Armeni ramp in West Seattle saw 35 boats with 29 pinks, seven kings and six coho today.

“It is pretty much all humpies, and the biggest coho was 7 pounds, and definitely an ocean fish that was caught at Dolphin Point (off north east side of Vashon Island),” Sergeef said. “There is so much grass in the water and that is making it tough to fish.”

The checker at the Shilshole Bay boat ramp said fishing was really good, and the catch was about one pink for every two boats. Most of those were checked from Shilshole Bay, Richmond Beach and Jefferson Head.
