Buoy-10 at Columbia River mouth just starting to pick up for salmon, but ocean off Ilwaco worth a firsthand look

The Buoy-10 salmon fishery at the Columbia River mouth hasn’t taken off just yet, but did show a sign of improvement in recent days and will build anytime now.

“It is good here in the ocean (off Ilwaco), and there was only a few boats in the Columbia (around Buoy-10) and the fish haven’t pushed into the river, but it could all change in a day,” said Tony Floor, director of fishing affairs for the Norhwest Marine Trade Association.

Just outside in the ocean, Floor reported this morning (Tuesday, Aug. 16) that many boats have been limiting, and the good fishing has been going on for several days as the salmon are stacking up while waiting to go up the Columbia.

“It is outstanding fishing, and we are just up from Long Beach in 35 feet of water, and we’ve got our three kings (30 to 25 pounds) and hooking coho. We released a 20 pound king while looking for coho.”

Anglers should remember that if it is slow at Buoy-10 one should be willing to head out into the ocean where fishing should be excellent.

Here are the checks from Buoy 10: Aug. 12, one charter boat with five anglers caught three chinook, and 42 private boats with 116 anglers caught eight chinook and four coho; Aug. 13, 55 boats with 146 anglers caught 13 chinook and two coho; Aug. 14, 38 boats with 98 anglers caught 14 chinook and one coho; and Aug. 15, 14 boats with 36 anglers caught one coho.
