Spot shrimp fishery to close soon in eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca

The sport spot shrimp fishery will close at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21 in the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca.

This includes all waters of Marine Area 6, which is located in the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca, but excludes the Discovery Bay Shrimp District which is closed for the season.

Fisheries managers say the sport spot shrimp quota in this area will be reached by that date.

Marine Area 6 will remain open until Oct.15 for non-spot (coonstripe and pink) shrimp. Shrimp pots with a minimum mesh size of ½ inch will now be allowed.

Please see pages 138 and 139 of the 2011/2012 “Fishing in Washington” rules pamphlet for details on pot mesh size rules, and descriptions of the shrimp species. All spot shrimp caught must be immediately returned to the water.
