The Westport Boat Basin Salmon Derby is Sept. 15 to Oct. 31, and it comes with a new twist.
This year the emphasis is on getting everyone into the salmon fishing action, and enjoying the fishing experience. No derby ticket purchase is required, and prizes range from salt water taffy, to meals at local restaurants, to overnight lodging.
Westport’s boat basin is the most accessible spot in the state to catch a salmon, right off the dock, and is the ideal place for generations of old and new fishers to share the experience and create new family traditions.
The salmon circle the marina and can be seen and caught from just about any dock.
The boat basin is also the perfect place to learn about the life cycle of Washington’s salmon.
Since the 1970’s Westport’s Ocasta High School has worked with state Fish and Wildlife to raise up to 200,000 fingerling salmon in pens at the marina as an oceanography project, and release them when they reach growth goal. When they mature they return in search of spawning grounds and can be caught right off the dock during derby days.
