Family Derby runs in conjunction with the Westport Boat Basin Derby next weekend

The Westport/Grayland Chamber of Commerce invites folks to attend the special Family Weekend Derby at the Westport Boat Basin on Oct. 1-2.

A special Weekend Family Derby has been added to the Westport Boat Basin Salmon Derby. Teams of two or more family members can register for fun prizes, and also qualify for the regular derby.

The boat basin is of the most easily accessible spots to catch a salmon right off the dock. The salmon circle the marina and can be seen and caught from just about any dock.

A special prize will be awarded to each team consisting of three generations or more, as well as sharing the experience and creating new family traditions.

Family derby rules are: Valid fishing license (children 15 and under not included); teams must consist of 2 or more related individuals of different generations; fish must be legally hooked and landed; all fishing to be done on floats within he Westport Marina; teams must register at 2521 Westhaven Drive (Windermere Real Estate) between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on both days; derby ends at 2 p.m. on Sunday at which time prizes will be awarded; and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place entrants based on weight with length used as a tie breaker.

The regular Westport Boat Basin Salmon Derby is held through Oct. 31.

This year the emphasis is on getting everyone into the salmon fishing action, and enjoying the fishing experience. No derby ticket purchase is required, and prizes range from salt water taffy, to meals at local restaurants, to overnight lodging.

Since the 1970’s Westport’s Ocasta High School has worked with state Fish and Wildlife to raise up to 200,000 fingerling salmon in pens at the marina as an oceanography project, and release them when they reach growth goal. When they mature they return in search of spawning grounds and can be caught right off the dock during derby days.
