Deer seen swimming across the channel in San Juan Islands heading to Canada

Now here was a sight to see during the Neilsen/Barr Fishing Classic that took place out of Roche Harbor on San Juan Island this past weekend.

Kevin Klein of Friday Harbor, and a member of the Puget Sound Anglers San Juan Islands Chapter and Coastal Conservation Association of Northsound came across a deer treading water off the island chain.

“This deer came swimming at our boat off Lime Kiln Point while we were trolling,” Klein said. “I think he wanted to hitch a ride. After a close call near our downrigger cables, he swam off across the channel, headed to Victoria.”

Jokingly Klein said: “He must not have heard our “Bucks” aren’t worth what they used to be across the border!”

I think maybe the deer knew about the upcoming modern firearms hunting season that starts up in mid-October in Washington, and figured this make a run for Canada.
