The much anticipated word on the winter Puget Sound region Dungeness crab fishery is expected to be officially announced some time this afternoon.

The sport seasons are all but finalized and here is what to expect in the coming months ahead.

Central Puget Sound (Marine Catch Area 10) and Hood Canal (Area 12) aren’t expected to reopen during the winter season as a result of exceeding the state’s harvest catch plan. At press time the crabbing seasons were unknown for south central Puget Sound (Area 11).

All marine areas north of northern Puget Sound, including the Strait of Juan de Fuca east of Neah Bay and the San Juan Islands (Areas 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4) are expected to open for Dungeness crabs in Oct. 8, and will be open daily. All areas are projected to close on Dec. 31.

Southern Puget Sound (Area 13), which is all waters south of the Narrows Bridge is expected to open beginning the week of Thanksgiving.

The daily catch limit in open areas of Puget Sound is five Dungeness crab, males only, in hard-shell condition with a minimum carapace width of 6 1/4 inches. Crabbers may also catch six red rock crab of either sex per day, provided those crab measure at least 5 inches across.

Additional information is available on the state Fish and Wildlife website.
