Lower Hanford Reach king fishery extended an additional nine days

A larger than expected return of chinook has allowed an extension on the sport fishery in the Lower Hanford Reach area of the Columbia River.

The adult return estimate is now predicted to be 72,904 adult chinook (not including hatchery returns). The in-season estimate increased by 8,000 adult chinook from the previous estimate (Oct. 7).

Chinook and coho fishing will now remain open through Oct. 31 between the Highway 395 Bridge at Pasco and the wooden power line towers at the old Hanford townsite.

The daily limit is six salmon; up to two adults may be retained. Anglers cannot continue to fish for jack salmon once the adult limit is retained. Both hatchery and wild (adipose clipped and unclipped) fall chinook and coho can be retained during this fishery.

Paul Hoffarth, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist in Pasco says his staff interviewed 219 boats last week with 279 adult chinook and 83 jacks.

Anglers averaged 1.7 chinook per boat. An estimated 1,772 adult chinook and 527 jacks were harvested this past week.

There were an estimated 3,264 angler trips this past week. For the season, 10,118 adult chinook, 2,402 jacks, and 43 coho have been harvested.
