Bridgeport area of Upper Columbia good fall fishing option for trout and steelhead

I returned to the Bridgeport area on the upper Columbia River to fish for steelhead. This time I took the Anantatmula family.

Brian is my dentist and his son was celebrating his sixth birthday, and his parents were in town, so we made it a family affair. Once again this area provided us with lots of action.

We caught mostly triploids, but one small jack salmon and Linda, Brian’s mom got a hatchery steelhead. There were very good numbers of fish on the west side of the river, below the bridge, and we took several further down stream, below the hatchery.

It was all bobber and jig fishing, and we had very good success with the Yakima Bait Maxi Jig. Bright pinks and oranges were the best colors.

The water level in this area was down three feet from the day before. It didn’t seem to make much difference. There is plenty of current here, if you fish during the week. Flows drop significantly on the weekends, and that can make fishing difficult.

The jigs I am using are the 1/4-ounce, and work best with the heavy current. I am tying on a fluorocarbon leader of 10-pound test, and be sure to use an improved clinch knot and check it twice when you tie on your jig.
