East side outdoors writer sets sight on Grande Ronde River steelhead

Here is the latest fishing report from Dave Graybill, longtime Eastern Washington outdoor radio host and angler:

I have a great trip planned. I have been trying to get down to Grande Ronde River for years, and it looks like I am finally going to make it.

I have been intrigued with the idea of fishing the Grande Ronde for steelhead, not just for the fish, but for they style of fishing and the scenery.

I will be meeting Brian Nielson, of BJs Guide Service, down there and he has been fishing the river for over 30 years. When he tells me about fishing the Grande Ronde he gets this distant look in his eye, and you know he has had some amazing days on the river.

He floats the river in his drift boat and you can tell it’s one of those spots that he would like to be all the time. If you visit his web site BJ Guide Service you can see some of the photos of the trips he has run and see how beautiful a trip it is. The river flows through the steep canyons in the southeastern corner of the state.

The Grande Ronde is noted for great steelhead fishing. They aren’t huge but they can be plentiful. My wife is coming along and we will be making a video of the experience, so you’ll be able to see what it is like.
