Tengu Winter Blackmouth Derby gives up third legal-size chinook

The Tengu Winter Blackmouth: Derby was held this past Sunday on Elliott Bay, and 35 anglers managed to catch only one legal-sized hatchery chinook.

Justin Wong of Seattle caught a 10 pound-3 ounce hatchery chinook that was caught off the old red roof area by Duwamish Head.

“This is the second double-digit winner in back-to-back Sundays,” Doug Hanada, President of the Tengu Winter Blackmouth said. “Some large balls of bait reported outside from the Head down to the beach area. Not a lot of bait around inside the Bay and very few shakers were there either.”

The derby held every Sunday, saw an 11-pound, 9-ounce hatchery chinook caught by Irene Kiga caught on Nov. 13.

Wong’s blackmouth was third legal-size fish since the derby began four weeks ago, and the third fish after eight consecutive Sundays dating back to last season.

The Tengu Derby is held at daybreak on Sundays through Dec. 18 at Seacrest Boathouse in West Seattle. Details are available by calling 206-324-7600.
