Nooksack River North Fork and Whatcom Creek closing Dec. 1 to all fishing

A weak winter steelhead return has prompted state Fish and Wildlife to close a section of the North Fork Nooksack River and Whatcom Creek to all fishing from Dec. 1 until further notice.

The Kendall Creek Hatchery and Whatcom Creek Hatchery winter steelhead programs have had difficulty securing adequate numbers of broodstock fish to meet spawning egg-take goals.

Closure of the fisheries, similar to past years, will allow the collection of sufficient numbers of fish to meet production needs.

The North Fork Nooksack River closure is from the Mosquito Lake Road Bridge upstream to the yellow post located at the upstream-most corner of the hatchery grounds, approximately 1,000 feet upstream of the mouth of Kendall Creek.

The Whatcom Creek closure is from the mouth to Woburn Street Bridge.

When the combined broodstock needs of Kendall Creek Hatchery and Whatcom Creek Hatchery are met, the fisheries may reopen and revert to seasons as listed in the sport fishing rules pamphlet.
