Poor wild winter steelhead returns prompt closures soon on Samish River

The Samish River from the I-5 Bridge to the Hickson Bridge will close Dec. 1, and areas from the mouth to the I-5 Bridge will close Jan.1 due to poor wild steelhead returns.

Hatchery steelhead releases in the Samish River were discontinued after the spring of 2008.

The closure will reduce incidental hooking mortality on wild steelhead, and are expected to return in numbers below spawning escapement goals. Puget Sound steelhead have been listed as a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act in May 2007.

The Samish will reopen to fishing on June 2 as listed in the sport fishing rules pamphlet.
