Five “Fish Friday” lakes in southwest Washington produced good trout action

Dubbed as “Fish Friday” by state Fish and Wildlife, the day after Thanksgiving was just that in five southwest Washington lakes planted with thousands of plump rainbow trout averaging 1 pound apiece.

“I was at Rowland Lake in Klickitat County, and fishing was pretty good there and (also) at Battleground (Lake),” said John Weinheimer, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist in Vancouver.

“Fishing pressure was pretty light at Rowland at beginning of day, but increased as the weather warmed up,” Weinheimer said. “It seemed like the fishing success got better as the day warmed up.”

Weinheimer went out with a friend at they each got the five-fish daily limit, and “they’re nice fish running about 1 1/4 pound each.”

“I expect fishing to stay real good, and the reports I got from Battleground were very good, although a lot more people,” Weinheimer said. “People were catching fish, and having a good time. I think it worked out pretty well and would like continue that fishery in the future.”

Weinheimer says he didn’t get any reports from the other lakes, and those include Fort Borst Park Pond and South Lewis County Park Pond in Lewis County that were each planted with 1,200 trout; and Kress Lake near Kalama in Cowlitz County which got 1,000.

Battleground Lake in Clark County received 2,500; and Rowland Lake in Klickitat County has 1,700.
