Latest word on steelhead fishing in Hanford Reach area

Here is how the sport steelhead fishery fared in December at the Hanford Reach on the Columbia River:

For the month of December an estimated 200 steelhead were caught between the Highway 395 Bridge at Pasco, and the wooden powerline towers at the old Hanford town site. Of these 107 were harvested, 86 steelhead were unclipped and released.

Based on the percentages of wild and unmarked hatchery steelhead sampled at the Off Ladder Trap at Priest Rapids Dam, 50 wild steelhead were caught and released, 25-percent of the catch. State Fish and Wildlife staff sampled 25-percent of the effort associated with this fishery.

For the fishery this year, an estimated 1,137 steelhead have been caught with roughly half of these fish were harvested.

A large number of unclipped hatchery and wild steelhead have been caught and released during this fishery.

Bank and boat anglers averaged a steelhead for every 13 hours fished. This included both hatchery and wild. Harvestable steelhead (hatchery-marked fish) averaged 18 hours per fish for bank, and 30 hours per hatchery steelhead for boat anglers.
