New southeast Washington areas open for winter steelhead fishing

Those planning a winter steelhead trip to southeast Washington have a new option to look at when fishing.

The state Fish and Wildlife Blue Mountains Wildlife Area Complex Manager Bob Dice reminds steelhead anglers of the recent addition of 2,200 acres in the Mountain View area in Asotin County, along two miles of the Grand Ronde River and north along Cougar Creek, is open now for outdoor recreation.

The acquisition is phase one of a multi-year project to put nearly 12,000 acres of the 4-O Ranch in public ownership for recreation and fish and wildlife habitat management as part of the Chief Joseph Wildlife Area.

Dice says many of the new property lines have been identified with “Wildlife Area” signs, but a map is available on the state Fish and Wildlife’s website.
