Latest southwest river winter steelhead returns good in some, not so in others

Hatchery winter run steelhead returns to date compared to the same time last year, show in general that hatchery returns are higher than last year from the Cowlitz downstream, but lower from the Kalama to the Washougal.

In specific:

Name of river: Return in 2012 and return in 2011

Grays River: 426 in 2012 and 324 in 2011

Elochoman River: 1,453 in 2012 and 266 in 2011

Cowlitz River: 2,189 in 2012 and 1,630 in 2011

Kalama River: 558 in 2012 and 663 in 2011

Lewis River: 1,724 in 2012 and 2,673 in 2011

Washougal River: 370 in 2012 and 430 in 2011

This year’s steelhead counts (329) at Bonneville Dam through Feb. 6 are less than half the recent 10-year average (694).

No more chinook have been counted at the dam since the adult and jack chinook were counted on Jan. 25.
