Sekiu in the Strait still going strong for hatchery chinook fishing

For all the bad weather and complaining from those who haven’t gotten out on the marine waterways to fish for hatchery chinook, here’s a story of some anglers who did and managed to make it a memorable one.

“On Monday, we had some of the best fishing I’ve seen in my life at Sekiu with clouds of candlefish and packs of chinook feeding on them,” said Tony Floor, director of fishing affairs for Northwest Marine Trade Association who fished with Congressman Norm Dicks and other anglers.

“We caught 18 fish for our group in two-days, and four were 12 to 15 pounds and the rest in the 7 to 8 pound range,” said Floor.

Floor and his group fished just west of the Caves at Sekiu.

“We fished 10 feet off the bottom, and when you dropped your bait through the bait you’d cach the fish that were stuffed with small candlefish,” Floor said.

Floor said the fishing on Tuesday wasn’t as good and the bait didn’t show up like it did the day before, but they still managed to catch eight chinook for 10 anglers who scratched them out.

Congressman Dicks had the biggest hatchery chinook that weighed 15 pounds.

Last Friday, Floor also fished the eastern Strait off Salmon Bank where they hooked nine chinook and kept three hatchery fish, plus his fishing partner had landed a 22 pounder the day before.

“We released a few small ones and a few wild fish, and put three in the boat on the outgoing tide,” Floor said.
