San Juan Islands still giving up hatchery chinook in fishing derby

SanJuanWChinook.jpg

Here is a San Juan Island hatchery chinook fishing report and results from the Frank Wilson Memorial Blackmouth Derby from Kevin Klein of Friday Harbor, and member of the PSA Fidalgo-San Juan Islands Chapter and CCA Northsound:

“Oh, so close! Well, I was in third place overall, and in the lead for the weekly winner in the Wilson Derby, until Pete Nelsen knocked my 14.88 pound fish off by almost a pound with his 15.82 pounds,” Klein said.

“I bet old Pete just loved that one. But, that’s the most fun of a season long tournament, watching the leader board change daily, and anything can happen. I knocked third place off in the last day of the derby in 2011. With one month left to go, this is usually when the biggest fish are caught. Pete wins the $50 gift certificate from Kings Marine for the second week in a row.”

Derby standings: 1. Marty Chevalier Sr., 19.92 pound hatchery chinook; 2. Bob Wilson, 16.32; 3. Pete Nelsen, 15.82; 4. Kevin Klein, 14.88. Women’s division winner: Karen Rhinehart, 13.00. Kid’s division winner: Race Rousar, 11.10.
