Westport halibut offshore fishery to close after one final opening this Sunday

halibut.jpg

The coastal halibut catches were so good off Westport that state fisheries managers have decided to close the season one day earlier than expected.

The halibut fishery will be open this Sunday (May 20), but fishing will not reopen as originally planned on Tuesday (May 22).

The Westport sport halibut fishery is projected to catch their quota by Sunday.

There is a separate sport catch quota set aside to allow halibut daily fishing in the northern nearshore area.

Westport anglers have been catching fairly easy their one-fish daily limit with each fish averaging about 14 pounds dressed.

Down at Ilwaco, the average weight of the halibut is 20 pounds dressed and for now they remain OK as far as their catch quota goes. Ilwaco is open Thursdays through Saturdays of each week until July 14 or once the catch quota is achieved.

Halibut fishing at Neah Bay and La Push remains open this Friday and Saturday (May 18-19). On the northern coast, bad weather during the last opener shot down the catch levels although angler effort remained high.

Elsewhere: Halibut fishing is allowed Thursdays to Saturdays only through June 2 in the eastern Strait and Puget Sound, except for the Memorial Day holiday week when it is open May 24-28.

The western Strait off Sekiu opens May 24 to June 23 from Thursdays to Saturdays only, except for the Memorial Day holiday week when it is open May 24-28.
