Hood Canal spot shrimp counts show great success rates

Here is quick recap of how the Hood Canal spot shrimp fishery finished up:

May 5: 1,510 total pots counted with 233 creel samples made, 3.6 total pots per boat, 5,388 anglers, 3.5 anglers per boat, 5,331 anglers counted, 5.0 pounds spot shrimp per pot, 17.8 pounds of spot shrimp per boat, 14.1 count/pound and 26,889 total spot shrimp catch.

May 11: 1,428 total pots counted with 232 creel samples made, 3.6 total pots per boat, 5,103 anglers, 3.1 anglers per boat, 4,493 anglers counted, 4.5 pounds spot shrimp per pot, 16.1 pounds of spot shrimp per boat, 14.2 count/pound and 23,051 total spot shrimp catch.

May 12: 1,580 total pots counted with 256 creel samples made, 3.6 total pots per boat, 5,308 anglers, 3.4 anglers per boat, 5,308 anglers counted, 4.4 pounds spot shrimp per pot, 15.6 pounds of spot shrimp per boat, 14.3 count/pound and 24,668 total spot shrimp catch.

May 16: 775 total pots counted with 160 creel samples made, 3.7 total pots per boat, 2,872 anglers, 3.1 anglers per boat, 2,422 anglers counted, 4.5 pounds spot shrimp per pot, 16.8 pounds of spot shrimp per boat, 13.3 count/pound and 13,204 total spot shrimp catch.

Totals: 5,293 total pots counted with 861 creel samples made, 18,985 anglers, 17,554 anglers counted and 87,632 total spot shrimp catch.

Daily average: 1,323 total pots counted with 215 creel samples made, 3.6 total pots per boat, 4,746 anglers, 3.3 anglers per boat, 4,389 anglers counted, 4.6 pounds spot shrimp per pot, 16.6 pounds of spot shrimp per boat, 14.0 count/pound and 21,908 total spot shrimp catch.

Mark O’Toole, a state Fish and Wildlife shellfish manager says there more than likely won’t be additional openings for spot shrimp since catches were remarkably good this season.
