The Port Angeles Salmon Club’s Halibut Derby is May 26-27, and the largest halibut caught is worth $5,000.

Second place is worth $2,500; third is $1,500; fourth is $1,200; fifth is $1,100; sixth is $1,000; seventh is $800; eighth is $700; ninth is $600; and 10th is $500.

Anglers are allowed to fish within Marine Catch Area 6 of the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca only.

Last year, Chuck Brown of Renton caught a 138 pound halibut to take home the grand prize. Brown outfished 664 anglers, including second place finisher Bryan Johnson of Port Angeles who caught a 107-pound halibut and third place went to Dale Clark of Shelton with a 106-pound halibut.

Tickets may be purchased on Friday (May 25) at the Port Angeles Yacht Club, the derby headquarters. Tickets are now available at Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles. For details, call 360-452-2357 or visit the Swain’s Inc. website.
