North Coast anglers will get two more days for halibut fishing

The sport halibut fishery off Neah Bay and La Push will reopen Thursday, May 31, and Saturday, June 2.

Four days of fishing this month produced a catch of 68,399 pounds with 39,631 pounds left in the quota. The total quota for the northern coast is 108,030 pounds.

State fisheies managers will reassess the catch once the two extra days are completed to see if more fishing can be allowed.

The daily limit is one halibut with no minimum or maximum size limit.

The only other coastal port open Thursdays to Saturdays is Ilwaco. Fishing there will be allowed until 80 percent of the catch quota is achieved or July 14, whichever comes first. Ilwaco will reopen Aug. 3 and continue three days per week (Friday-Sunday), until the remaining quota is taken, or until Sept. 30, whichever occurs first. The early quota is 9,516 pounds; the late quota is 2,379 pounds.

The halibut catch was so good at Westport that the fishery closed this past week, but there is a nearshore incidental halibut catch allowed.
