Westport hatchery chinook opener was the best seen in the past few years with limits of fish

Mark Cedergreen, president of the Westport Charterboat Association reported that today’s (Saturday, June 9) opening for hatchery marked chinook fishing in the ocean was one of the best openers in the three years since the selective fishery began.

“It was a little sloppy in the ocean, and I know a number of smaller private boats didn’t go fishing,” Cedergreen said. “I know the five or six charter boats that did go out after salmon did pretty well.”

Cedergreen says one charter with 20 people on board caught 40 kings, a couple of six-man charters had their (two-chinook daily per rod daily) limits, and some other boats whohad close to near limits.

Most of the charter fleet was fishing down near Willapa Bay and just south of Grays Harbor.

“The catch was made up of the typical three-year-old chinook, and they were nice, beautiful bright fish in the 12 to 15 pound range,” Cedergreen said. “The weather is supposed to settle down in the next day or two so we’ll see how things go.”
