Chinook bite still good in the ocean, but coho are almost non-existent off Westport and Ilwaco

The best ocean salmon fishing activities continues to be centered mainly around Westport and Ilwaco where anglers can now keep all chinook and hatchery-marked coho.

“We’re seeing a lot of chinook and limits of chinook, but almost no coho in catches at Westport,” said Wendy Beeghly, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist. “The chinook are still running 10 to 12 pounds, and Idid see one fish at Westport that was close to 18 pounds.”

“It was pretty busy, but it wasn’t huge crowd and we had about 160 or 170 boats at Westport (on Sunday),” Beeghly said. “It was outstanding water conditions, and the best fishing is still close in near the mouth of the harbor and they’re not running very far out.”

Beeghly said they checked one boat who found some coho at Westport, and they didn’t see anyone do well on coho at Ilwaco on Saturday.

Fishing reports were few and far in between, although one state Fish and Wildlife salmon manager fished up at Neah Bay, and had no problem limiting on chinook. His boat ran down into southern part of Area 4 just above the Area 3-4 line.

Westport is open Sundays to Thursdays for salmon until Sept. 30, and Ilwaco is open daily through Sept. 30.

La Push and Neah Bay are open daily for hatchery-marked chinook fishing until June 30, and then open for all chinook and hatchery-marked coho daily from July 1 to Sept. 30.

Each port might close sooner if quotas are achieved.
